February 24th, and this is my first blog post for 2012. What have I been doing since the holidays?

Well, I'm closing a chapter in my life soon. As happy as I am to finish it, I'm also anticipating new challenges in the coming months. In order to address them, I started the year by listening to a series of marketing seminars online and attended a seminar at my local Chamber of Commerce on How to Start a Small Business. I guess you could say, I was problem solving and trying to figure out next steps.

"Where do I go from here?"

And then, it hit me - the worse cold and flu bug ever! I was sick for over a month, and I couldn't quite kick the bug. What started out a cold/flu, turned into a bad case of bronchitis. And I thought I'd never get better. =/

Thankfully, with much patience, the sickness passed and just in time for the Wedding & Portrait Photography International (WPPI) Conference in Las Vegas on February 18 - 22. In fact, I just got home two days ago!

The conferences sent me in somewhat of a different direction. Thus, I came home with some solid goals that will eventually take me where I want to go. And that list keeps growing!

I'm excited, inspired, and challenged. Hence, the title of this blog, "Aspire. Act. Achieve."

I don't know where the phrase came from, so I can't give anyone proper credit. It was written on a notepad sitting on my desk, and it happened to jump out at me with deeper meaning this morning.

Aspire. Act. Achieve... stay tuned for my next chapter. As long as you're reading, I'll be happy to take you along on my journey.

Reflecting on the Year 2011

Reflecting back on 2011, I must say, "I'm so thankful!"

I started the year asking myself what are my favorite things. From there, I went on a quest to focus on those things and to cultivate what I am most passionate about. In doing so, my plan was to enjoy the journey and the process of discovery.

Now, as I reflect on 2011 and as I peruse my posts, I end the year with absolute thankfulness. In addition to acquiring new photography equipment, I was blessed with some great projects that I never anticipated earlier that year. (I even made enough to report income on my taxes. Haha!)

God is good!

One of my major accomplishments was designing and implementing a new church website for Solano Valley Church, complete with search engine optimization and social media outlets. I was also given the privilege of revamping their branding through various marketing pieces and promotional items.

Also, as I continue on the path of completing my degree, I took two photography classes in 2011 - photojournalism and product advertising. Both classes have added to my creative journey in exponential ways.

Now, I'm looking forward to what's on the horizon.

This is my photography final for the product and advertising class I took this semester. The idea is to make a holiday promo piece to send to friends, family, as well as current/potential clients, and most importantly, to showcase my work. I developed a few concepts with my photography and some type.

I had so much fun with this assignment, I may do a few more before the season is over. That is, AFTER I do our annual family Christmas card. I am running out of time!

An apple martini as part of my photography assignment. A few hours and 200+ photos later, this is what I came up with.

Lighting and properly exposing the shot wasn't the challenge at all. It was more like coordination and timing - that is, pouring the liquid with one hand and holding down shutter button with the other.

I didn't know I was THAT uncoordinated. I'm laughing at myself right now, but it was fun!

In preparation for a graduation/18th birthday party, I rented another camera lens from Borrow Lenses in San Carlos. This is just a practice shoot I did. I love the sharpness and image quality!

Hmmm! I wonder how this picture would look framed or as a canvas? How about in sepia, or black and white?

Favorite Things: Summer and Korean BBQ

Two of my favorite things: Summer and Korean Food.

For our first summer BBQ of the year, I decided to try some new recipes. It was a success! I made tri-tip bulgogi and chicken dak gui with rice and pickled daikon. Yummy! I love Korean food.

Again, it's not the most creative photo, but I'm just keeping up with my 2011 theme - favorite things. Summer weather, BBQ's, and Korean food are at the top of my list.

Arrrrgh!! This is my second year at the Pirates Festival at the Vallejo Waterfront. I like taking pictures of the pirates, particularly the ones that really play the part. It's so much fun, and it's a great day to be out in the sun. Love it!

Cupcake Toppers and Favor Tags

I was asked to bake cupcakes for a baby shower, so I decided on vanilla cupcakes with passionfruit cream cheese frosting. I'm honestly more of a cupcake EATER than a cupcake baker, which means I'm not much of a cupcake decorator either.

I went online and got this idea. Theirs was 3" in diameter, and they used lollipop sticks. I thought that would be a bit big for a cupcake, so I came up with an idea that would work better for me.

And, this is what I made!! =)

1.5" cake toppers with toothpicks (instead of lollipop sticks). That's half the size of the ones I found online. And, they can also be use as favor tags. Pretty nifty, you think?

In my kitchen, I enjoy trying new recipes. I am particularly challenged when it comes to trying my favorite restaurant food.

This favorite, Pesto Breadsticks with Marinara Sauce, comes from Mary's Pizza Shack. They're not only easy to make, they're just as delicious as the restaurant's! In fact, I was told my marinara sauce was even better. ;)

Now that is satisfaction! My favorite food, homemade, and at a fraction of the cost. I love it!

I guess I will be adding this menu item to my list of food "not to order," since I can make them myself.

My Favorite Things

When the dog bites,
When the bees sting,
When I'm feeling sad,
I simply remember my favorite things,
and then I don't feeeeel soooo baaadd!!!

As I was sitting on the couch enjoying my morning tea, I started humming this song - Favorite Things. I'm not sure why, but I had to ask myself.

"What are my favorite things?"

I'm not going to start 2011 with a bunch of resolutions - to lose weight, to exercise more, or to take a picture a day and post them on my website - because we all know how that will end.

For example, a year ago, I started the 365 photo project and quickly discovered how difficult it was. There were days when I didn't even think about my camera, and of course, there were days when I did something fun and walked a way with hundreds of pictures. My so-called project ended up being 365 TOTAL photos (as opposed to one a day), until I found out that Flickr was going to charge me if I post more than 200 pictures..... FAIL!!!!!!

Needless to say, I never finished that project. So this year, I'm not going to start off with a bunch of resolution full of good intentions. Pastor Rick Warren preached a message on setting goals last Sunday, so I plan to set a few. Otherwise, my goal by default is to stay the same, as he put it.

With that said, one of my goals is to focus on "a few of my favorite things" and then I don't feeeellll..... no. That's not where I was going! I want to focus on my favorite things. I want to cultivate what I am most passionate about. In doing so, I plan to enjoy the journey and the process of discovery.

What are my favorite things? Food, photography, and the ability to create.

I see a door that is wide open, don't you?

Saying bye to 2010

Final Project: Commercial Photography

For my Intro to Pro Photography class, I chose commercial photography for my final project. I incorporated several aspects of professional photography that were covered during the semester. Here's what I came up with.

I used my still-life photographs and designed mock magazine ads.

And finally, I imitated the inside cover of the Stash tea catalog but used my own photograph (of course).

I enjoyed every minute of this project, and better yet, I got great reviews during the critique. Fun stuff.... fun stuff!

Behind the Camera

I helped a fellow photography classmate by posing for his final project. His idea was to take pictures of other photographers with their work projected behind them. I commend him for an awesome concept. I think it's brilliant! Although next time, I think I prefer to be behind the camera. =)

Duke, the Model

Every time I setup studio lights, Duke knows he has a part to play. And, that's to be my model! This time I was shooting my Intro to Pro Photography final.

In my Intro to Pro class, we explored yet another genre of photography - that is, interior/exterior photography. We had the privilege of going to a $7 million mansion in a beautiful North Bay town, called Tiberon.

It was a nice day out taking pictures. The weather was perfect, and the view was spectacular.

SF Giants: The Champions of the World

The San Francisco Giants win the 2010 World Series! I could not resist this historic day without taking pictures, so I joined hundreds of thousands of fellow bay areans and Giants fans at the Civic Center for the victory parade. What a fun day!

With something as simple as tomatoes, I didn't realize how hard shooting them would be. It took me almost four hours and over 100 shots to get the two or three pictures I needed to complete the project.

Benicia Brochure Layout

In my Intro to Professional Photography class, the assignment was to take any pictures of the city of Benicia and to present them in a brochure-type layout. Because I enjoy incorporating design with my photography, it was an exceptionally fun project.

There is so much about Benicia to capture in just three brochure layouts. So, for the last layout, I decided to include the most important elements of this city - the people of Benicia. Thanks to some sporty kids I know, I used these pictures to capture the essence of community in this city.

Dear family and friends -

In July 2009, as I was walked around the Solano County Fair, I came across a Barbizon Modeling booth with a sign that said, “$100,000 College Scholarship!” Free money for college was just what I needed, so I signed up. A week later I was invited to an audition/interview and free seminar in Rohnert Park, CA. The following day, I received news that I had been accepted into the Barbizon program. In August, I began my 6 month modeling training at Barbizon in San Francisco. I learned modeling techniques for print and runway with experienced teachers in the business.

“I’m going to Hollywood!”

In January, I completed the courses and auditioned with talent agent, Renee Eppers, along with over 80 other talents, hoping to be invited to IPAC in HOLLYWOOD. Only 300 models and actors in the nation are invited to the International Performing Arts Conference (IPAC) each summer. Of the 80 that auditioned with me that day, I was one of the few who were invited!

IPAC will take place June 24-27, 2010. Once there, I will have exposure to, and will be recognized by, top agents, managers, and casting directors in HOLLYWOOD, the entertainment industry’s capital! Representatives that will be in attendance include agents from Disney Channel, Macy’s, ABC, and Old Navy, to name a few.

This is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity for me.

But before that, I need to go through four more months of training with professionals from the International Performing Arts Academy, and I need to raise $6,000. This money covers the full conference package, which includes a four-day and three-night stay at Millennium Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles (the home of the Oscars), workshops with Hollywood’s best teachers, and a red-carpet event where I will get to meet the agents. It also covers representation, management, and marketing during and after the conference, as well as professional photo shoots and exposure on Modelwire.com which is exclusive for industry companies only.

This is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity for me, but I need your help. I know you’re already cheering me on, and now I’m asking you to help me raise this significant amount of money to cover the things I’ve listed above. This photo marks the beginning of my formal education in photography. I'm currently enrolled in a black & white film photography class. Yup, FILM!=)

Aside from all the aspects of photography, I'm learning how to shoot with manual settings. It's hard, and I'm slow. But, I'm loving the results! Up until this point, I think I've gotten lucky as an amateur photographer. However, it's time to take it to the next level.

This picture was taken "the day after rain." I love days like these! The air is cool and fresh. And with the storm gone, there's a sense of hope and renewal. I love it!

The new year always brings about new beginning, new goals, and new ideas. For me, I'm still setting my goals for 2010 but I have decided on a new project that may help me become a better photo taker.

As if committing to this blog wasn't enough, I've decided to embark on a project that was introduced to me by a friend called, "Project 365." I'm not sure where it originated, but if you google it, the concept has been around for a while now.

Basically, you take one picture a day for 365 days straight and post it on the web. While it seems like quite an undertaking, I imagine it will pay off in the end. Not only will I have a visual history of my journey in 2010, it will force me to go out and take pictures. And by doing so, I hope to improve my photography skills.

Some of the photos will be taken from my iPhone and others from my digital SLR, depending on which camera I have on hand. So whether I take one picture or many pictures in a day, I will post at least one for the next 365 days. (Shheww! Let's see how it goes.)

Puppy Portraits

Every now and then, Duke's friend, Chewy, will disappear for an hour or two without anyone noticing he's gone. Thankfully for us, he's never actually missing. In fact, 99.9% of the time we find him relaxing in the sun by a window.

So I took this opportunity to take pictures of Duke and Chewy, and I experimented with the sun shining into the room.

Today we had the most AMAZING weather - a sunny day after rain. I loved it!! What a great day to be out taking pictures of kids' sports!

I followed a coach with four kids - three of which had different games today. Wow!

Celebration of Life

A tribute gathering to celebrate the lives of four precious people... gone too soon.

As early as 4th grade, the Lastrella family played a significant role in my childhood and teen years. I have in my heart many fond memories, so the loss they (we) experienced saddens me deeply.

The Celebration of Life that took place today was a time to remember Chris, Cleofe, Mark, and Mahala and to celebrate their lives. For me personally, it was a chance to come together and to support a family who has given me so much over the years.

To the Lastrellas, if you have not heard me say it, "Thank you!"

My prayers go out to you daily. I pray for strength and for that deep peace only God himself is capable of giving.

This driver took advantage of the government program called, "Cash for Clunkers." With the economy as it is, coupled with the need for reliable transportation, the owner was forced to part with this classic 1988 Toyota truck. It was purchased by his grandfather the year he was born, and he used to play in it as early as 12 months old.

It was a sad day, so a photo shoot was definitely in order. Here are a few of my favorites:

What a Day!

Today was a beautiful day as I witnessed the union of two very special people. My partner, Leona of Lokahi Studios in SoCal, and I spent nine hours taking pictures of this happy occasion but that didn't stop us from having a great time. To us, having fun consists of more than the festivities itself but by the opportunity to capture memories as seen through our eyes.

Here is the slideshow produced by me at Duke Designs. It was displayed at the Benicia Clock Tower in the reception area of the hall. It was a nice, eye-catching point of interest for family and friends to enjoy. The slideshow is a little long (like 8:11 minutes), so grab yourself a cup of coffee and enjoy.

I spent time at Southampton Park in Benicia taking pictures of this beautiful couple who is getting married on Saturday. I call these their "Life Together" pictures. They were used for the wedding slideshow I produced, and they added a nice touch at the end to say, "Today, they become one!"

Today, I am finalizing a wedding slideshow for next week's wedding celebration. I spent some time on the internet looking for romantic quotes to include, instead I found these which I think are hilarious.

Cherished Moments at it's Finest

My overall goal when taking pictures is to capture cherished moments at it's finest. I do this by planning ahead and having a basic frame for what I want to accomplish. At the same time, I always make room for spontaneous shots and ideas.

For toddlers or small kids, I try to suggest nice parks with many colors and interesting things to occupy their attention and ease any tension. I also ask parents to bring a few props and to be prepared to take pictures just in case.

This particular shoot took place yesterday at Children's Wonderland in Vallejo - a small park that's been newly renovated. (Thank goodness. Remember how ghetto it was?) =)

As I'm going through the wedding pictures I shot a few days ago, I just have to say this: When it comes to Filipino families, who DOESN'T have an uncle that sings like Elvis?

Or, a relative that can dance like Michael Jackson?

Who doesn't join in on the line dance?

And last but not least, who doesn't love this party guest? (Mmm! Pass the sarsa.)

Beautiful Wedding

Today, I took pictures at my first, small wedding photo gig. It was a beautiful ceremony - small and intimate, the way it should be. I think this is the first wedding I got choked up and almost cried.

The groom sang "You are so Beautiful" as the bride walked down the aisle, and certainly she was! The bride sang a song to the groom before exchanging vows, she had the most beautiful voice and sang with much eloquence.

Both the bride and groom wrote their own vows, then the bride's older brother and his wife sang a song saying:

Is this the little girl I carried?

I don't remember growing older, when did they?
When did she get to be a beauty?
When did he grow to be so tall?
Wasn't it yesterday, when they were small?

Baby Dedication

Getting together with family is always fun. Today, we celebrated the baby dedication of my cousin's daughter. As usual, there was lots of food, conversation, and of course, pictures. Here's one.

My cousins have a tradition that each grandchild wear the Christening outfit they wore as babies. So far seven people in their family used it for their Christening and/or dedication in the last 40 years. Very cute, in my opinion.

What a Week it's Been!

What a week this has been! Where do I begin? Sigh...

On Tuesday, I glued my eyes to the television, along with millions around the world, watching Michael Jackson's memorial service. It's sad and hard to believe. But I appreciated Pastor Lucious Smith's closing prayer which summed it up and brought everything into perspective. He said, "the King of Pop must now bow his knee to the the King of Kings .... reminding us that our lives are but dust. We're here for a moment, then we're gone."

My thoughts? Life is short, so make it count!

Another thing that makes this week significant is that it marks one year since getting laid off from my last job. Not that it means a great deal, I'm simply reflecting back at the past year - where I was then and where I am now. Though the year presented challenges in and of itself, I'm excited about my business and contently waiting to see where it takes me. Honestly, I believe God has something in mind for my life at this particular time - something specifically taylored for me! It's kinda scary, yet exciting!

And despite some of my stress which I experienced much of this week, I'm attempting to make it count! I'm persevering, if you will.

With that said, anybody wanna schedule a photo shoot?.... OK, do you have friends who wanna schedule a photo shoot? Hehe! Call me!

First Engagement Photo Shoot

Disney's "A Christmas Carol" Train Tour

Aww, Disneyland - one of my favorite places ever!

During my visits to this theme park, I cannot help but think what goes on behind the scenes of creating "the happiest place on earth." I am impressed by Disney's organization as a whole - from the smallest detail to the grandiose attractions. Most of all, I am intrigued by the work of such creative geniuses. All I can say is, "Wow!"

And today was no different.

Disney's "A Christmas Carol" Train Tour was in the San Francisco Bay Area, and we were fortunate to have gone. We enjoyed looking at the displays, discovering the making of this holiday film, and watching the 3D footage from the movie. And though Christmas is 181 days away, I found myself excited about the holiday season and of course, the movie which will be in theaters on November 6, 2009.

While on the train, I experimented with "no flash" photography. Here are a few pictures:

(Silly trivia about Darlene: Did you know one of my dreams is to be Tinkerbell in the fireworks show at Disneyland and fly across the sky? I may have to apply for that job someday.)

Everyday is a New Beginning

As I was doing my daily peruse of status updates on Facebook, a friend reminded me that 'everyday is a new beginning.' How very true, and what an encouraging way to start a Monday and a new week. Everyday is an opportunity to make things different, to make beneficial choices, and to "live the life of your design." Are you doing what you love? What is your dream job? How do you want to live life?

Duke Designs is my dream job, and everyday is a new beginning to make it happen.

Earlier today, I updated the website for Lokahi Design to officially announce the launch of two new businesses in Southern California and Northern California - Lokahi Studios and Duke Designs respectively. Even though Lokahi Designs was short lived, it was definitely significant to both Leona and I as it served as a springboard to new and exciting things. Had we not taken a chance in October 2008, we would not be where we are today. (Actually, I think it started over two scoops of pohaberry ice cream in Hilo, HI in April 2007. That's when we began talking about going into business, but at that point, we didn't know what we wanted to do.) =)

Of course, God sees all. From the start, we never envisioned what would come out of the business nor did we imagine such an immense change just six months later, but it happened - Joe's new job, their move to SoCal, their new house, and now, our new businesses. (I'm getting teary-eyed)

With that said, here's a tribute to Lokahi Designs - something to remember. Press play and sing "Better Together" by Jack Johnson. =)

First Photo Shoot as Duke Designs

I had a nice first photo shoot today, and the weather was perfect - partly overcast and not too windy.

With local scenery as my backdrop and the sun as my lighting, I'm always on the lookout for nice places to take pictures. I have to ask myself, "what time does the sun go down? Which way is it facing? Is it too windy? Is this location picture perfect?" Thankfully, my first photography client pointed out two COOL locations. How exciting!

If you know of any nice places in Vallejo, Napa, Benicia, Fairfield, and Vacaville, please do tell.... and bring your family too. =)

The Movie - Marley and Me

This weekend, I left my puppies, Duke and Chewy, at home while I enjoyed a mini-vacation with family in Lake Tahoe. Boy, talk about separation anxiety. I worry about my little furry friends because I think they'll feel sad while I'm gone.

After I left on Thursday morning, I did fine. In fact, I didn't think about Duke and Chewy too much. And just when I thought I'd make it through the entire weekend, someone busts out the movie - Marley and me. Normally when people tell me certain movies will make me cry, I don't. Perhaps they ruin it for me or it's just plain pride, but wow!!! I was not expecting that ending. The other dog owners that went on the trip got teary-eyed and suddenly missed their dogs. Seeing as how I am not the only one, I feel normal and sane. After all, our furry friends are family too. =)

Happy thoughts and cleansing breaths!

"Think happy thoughts and don't forget to breathe." This is what I have to keep reminding myself. My solo flight as Duke Designs is getting closer. Actually, it has already begun - it's just finally sinking in!

Next week, I have my first Duke Designs photo shoot and next week, Leona Snyder, "my partner in crime" per se (and Lokahi Designs) will be moving back to Southern California. (happy/sad face)

The Hawaiian translation for Lokahi is harmony or unity. This described our partnership at Lokahi Designs, a portrait photography and design business - www.lokahidesigns.com. (L is for Lokahi and Leona; D is for Designs and Darlene.)

When Leona announced her move in April, I started thinking about our business and how we might continue after her move. At first, I wasn't sure what a "photography business" would look like without studio equipment - a good camera, lights, backdrops, and props. And even WITH the equipment, I wouldn't say studio photography was my strongest card. Don't get me wrong! I love photography, but I am more comfortable with casual, lifestyle photography and my passion is more toward graphic design. The more I thought about it, the more my thoughts drifted toward creating something different - something of my own. I thought, "why not?"

After talking to Leona about venturing in a different direction, I made a commitment to myself. I promised myself I'd followup on every idea that pops into my head believing at least ONE had to be from God. At least, ONE! (I'm kidding. My faith is a much bigger than that!) Anyway, this is what started the fast forward motion toward Duke Designs and everything you see so far - every detail and sample on my site, my website itself, as well as my research and upcoming business plans and proposals.

What do I have to lose? These days... not too much. (smile) So, it is here - my solo flight as Duke Designs with my first photo shoot coming up on Monday, 6/15.

Okay, it's corny, I know!! I am both excited and nervous. Thanks to my cheering crowd who reminds me its gonna be OK. Thanks guys. =)

Welcome to Duke Designs

Hi! I’m the aspiring creator behind Duke Designs. Duke is one of my dogs. He, along with Chewy, sleeps under my desk while I spend many hours working on my computer. These faithful friends of mine keep me company.

I recently read, “The creative individual is unable to stop working because he can’t stop thinking. To him, there is nothing more enjoyable than work in which he can use his creative powers.”

That would be me! Whether it’s trying new recipes, figuring out how-to, or creating designs, I thrive on ideas and I even lie awake at night thinking about them. Yes, I blame these “brain explosions” for some of my sleepless nights. But most of the time, these ideas are good ideas. In fact, often times they surprise me.

I often say, "my job at Azusa Pacific University was my best job ever." It was there my passion for graphic design and visual communication began. Being surrounded by creative people who thrived on ideas and were empowered to take risks in pursuing those ideas awakened something new in me. Though I was the print buyer/production coordinator, I found myself being constantly drawn toward the creative facet of our office and I was encouraged to explore. It was a great seven-year journey at the university, and I've walked away with a solid foundation for what I do today.

In 2005, the same year we purchased Duke from the clearance section at a pet store in Glendora, the concept of Duke Designs was born. That same year I designed our first offset-printed family Christmas card, created a Duke Design logo, and designed my Reflections of His Glory notecards, which were given as Christmas gifts.

At the time, designing was a hobby - something I enjoyed doing and something people liked seeing. Now four years later, after many more design opportunities and after a partnership with Lokahi Designs, Duke Designs is its own creative venture. This is where my passion culminates, and this is where the journey begins.
